Birth Disparity

One of the strongest predictors of low birth weight, preterm birth, and infant mortality is being a mother of African American/Black race. In 2011, specific data provided by the Department of Health for Brevard County shows infant mortality was 11.5 (per 1,000 births)  for African American/Black births, compared to 5.6 (per 1,000 births) for White births.

The Birth Disparity Collaborative is exploring options and best practices for the reduction and prevention of low birth weight and preterm babies and infant mortality in our African American/Black community. The Birth Disparity Collaborative is also focused on developing a public awareness/educational campaign to target these issues.
